Campanario is a municipality located in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. Its origins date back to the Chalcolithic period, as evidenced by the archaeological remains found in the area of the Paredón dam.
The founding of the current locality occurred with the repopulations that took place after the reconquest of the area in the 13th century. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the town experienced its greatest period of splendour due to the conquest of America. Conquistadors such as Bartolomé Maldonado came from Campanario.
The main churches of the municipality date from this period. In the 19th century, after the fall of the Ancien Régime, it became a constitutional municipality, beginning a slow but continuous demographic and economic growth.
