Medellín

Medellín is a municipality located in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. Known as the birthplace of Hernán Cortés, its foundation dates back to the Roman era under the name of Metellium. Prior to this period, the pre-Roman city of Conisturgis was established in this location.

In the year 768, it fell under Muslim control, who reconstructed the Roman fortification. In 1227, it was reconquered by King Alfonso IX of León; years later, his son, Fernando III the Saint, incorporated it into the Crown of Castile.

The period of Medellín’s greatest splendor was during the American conquest, being the locality that contributed the most conquerors, around 280 people. In the 19th century, following the fall of the Old Regime, it became a constitutional municipality.
