Monterrubio de la Serena is a municipality located in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. It is situated in the foothills of Sierra Morena, the natural border between Extremadura and Andalucía.
It appears that its origins are rooted in the ancient locality of Alcantarilla, which was destroyed by King Alfonso IX, with its population relocated to new lands.
Its foundation took place in the 12th century, being controlled by the Order of Alcántara. After the fall of the Ancien Régime in the 19th century, it became a constitutional municipality.
