Baños de Montemayor is a municipality located in the province of Cáceres, Extremadura. Its origins seem to date back to Roman times due to some important thermal complexes from that period that were linked to the Vía de la Plata, being identified with the mansio of Cecilio Vico or Caelionico.
During the early Middle Ages it was abandoned and repopulated in the 12th century, becoming a frontier town that marked the borders of the kingdoms of Castile and León. Due to its strategic location, Baños de Montemayor has been a key place in historical events such as the War of Independence. Nowadays, due to its climate and its thermal waters, it is a major tourist attraction.
