Fuente de Cantos is a municipality located in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. Known for being the birthplace of the painter Francisco de Zurbarán, its foundation dates back to the 13th century, after the Castilian reconquest of this area.
However, its origins seem to date back to prehistoric times, and during the Roman period, it occupied a strategic position due to its location on the Via de la Plata.
Like many localities in the area, the period of the conquest of America brought a great socio-economic boost to the municipality, with its main monuments and churches dating from this era.
