Zafra is a municipality located in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. Its foundation dates back to the 11th century, as a strategic location between the taifa kingdoms of Seville and Badajoz. It was during this time that it was named Çafra.
Interestingly, Zafra was reconquered twice, first by Alfonso IX of León in the year 1229, and then by his son, King Fernando III the Saint, in the year 1240.
This town was crucial in the conquest of America, as over 200 conquistadors departed from here to the New World.
Therefore, the 16th and 17th centuries can be considered the peak periods of the city’s splendour, with its main monuments dating from this era.
