Aljucén

Aljucén is a municipality in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. This town has its origins in Roman times, as demonstrated by the archaeological remains found in the area and its links to the Vía de la Plata (Silver Route).

During the Muslim domination it was called Al-Junciel, the name from which the present name derives and which is possibly related to the river Junciel. After the Christian reconquest, it was one of the towns that became part of the Encomienda de Mérida and was thus controlled by the Order of Santiago. After the fall of the Ancien Régime in the 19th century, it became a constitutional municipality.
